The House Government Accountability and Oversight Committee has scheduled a hearing on House Bill (HB) 512 for Wednesday March 7. The committee will accept proponent, opponent and interested-party testimony at the hearing. Our three organizations are preparing to testify in opposition to the bill.
We urge members to make contact with their own House members to oppose the bill prior to Wednesday’s hearing. HB 512 would abolish the Ohio Department of Education by merging the agency with the Ohio Department of Higher Education and the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation, creating a new agency called the Department of Learning and Achievement. This change would substantially lessen the role and authority of the State Board of Education and undermine the ability for members to provide input into the education public policy process.
In response to several requests, click here for a sample board resolution opposing HB 512. We encourage local boards to take action. If your board adopts a resolution, please notify Marcella Gonzalez at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you would like to provide testimony at this week’s hearing, please contact us for assistance. You will need to submit your testimony electronically to the committee chairman by 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6. The hearing on Wednesday begins at 9:30 a.m., and there are several bills on the agenda. There may be more opportunities to testify going forward, but future hearing dates are not yet known.
In the meantime, it is urgent that you contact legislators immediately to make them aware of your opposition to HB 512!
