ALEC is bankrolled by corporations, including charter school management companies such as K12, Inc. This non-profit corporation churns out "model" legislation designed to undermine the public school system and to support charters, vouchers, education savings accounts and state takeover schemes. Privatization of government is the main thrust of ALEC.
About one third of the legislators in most states hold membership in ALEC; hence, their "model" bills get favorable consideration in Statehouses across America.
ALEC Exposed is a good resource for learning about the ALEC agenda and activities. ALEC folks know public school officials and personnel are extremely busy serving district children and have little time and/or interest in state policy matters. Thus, they accomplish their anti-public school agenda with little resistance. Most public school employees don't know about ALEC or its sinister half-century campaign to transfer public education to the private sector.
It is time for school district officials and personnel, and other public school advocates to inform the public about the chicanery of ALEC.
